Note: This is potentially very confusing! Most chemistry sources that talk about this give either one or the other of these two diagrams without any comment at all - they don't specifically say that they are using constant energy or constant speed beams. If the electrons and protons are travelling with the same speed, then the lighter electrons are deflected far more strongly than the heavier protons.
